If you are the parent of a young child and watch Dora the Explorer on Nick Jr., the phrase "Backpack, Backpack" can be heard in the background of this popular television show targeting the three to eight year old. The influence of television programs such as Dora the Explorer on Nick Jr. can be utilized by parents to help our children learn valuable life lessons. Let's consider Dora and her backpack.
The question is: How can you use a Dora episode to teach your child? What can you, as the parent, take away from this simple and creatively designed television show?
The answer is: You can use the Map, a tangible object in Dora's backpack, to teach a value lesson.
This is what you know:
• A map is a guide.
• A map is a visual image.
• Dora's Map communicates.
• Dora has a goal and direction.
• Dora asks Map for help and clarification.
• Map repeats instructions three times.
• Dora's Map has benchmarks to indicate accomplishments on the journey.
• Dora expects obstacles and has a strategy.
• Swiper the Fox always appears to attempt to change the momentum.
• Dora always knows what to do about Swiper on her journey.
• Dora has a positive adventurous spirit.
• Dora always reaches her destiny.
How do you take what you know about Dora and her Map and teach a value lesson?
• You sit with our child who is watching the show for the umpteenth time.
• You pay attention to the details of the creator's intent.
• You engage your child in a discussion.
What kind of questions can you ask your child? First, be amazed at your child's responses. Encourage your child to share their ideas with simple prompts first and extend the questioning one step further to help them grow.
• Why does Dora have a Map?
• What does the Map do for Dora?
• When does Dora use her map?
• What might happen if Dora didn't have Map or lost Map?
• Do you have a Map?
• Would you like a Map?
• What could you use as a map?
• Could I (the parent) be your map?
• Who else might be like your map?
• Do we have a special book that is like a map? (value book or spiritual book such as the Bible)
• How can we use this book to guide us?
There are many ways in which you can learn from Dora and Map. Consider this time as an opportunity to learn how your child thinks. And, see the possibilities for sharing your own values with your child. Dora's backpack has just the tools she needs for her journey. She also always has Map and knows how to use it. As your child grows, what tools are being given to guide them on their journey? And, do they know how to use those tools effectively?
As a parent and educator, I encourage you to reflect on what is in your child's backpack. Some day, you may need their expertise! Don't you ever wish the only items in YOUR backpack were things you really needed...
